KERALA NADVATHUL MUJAHIDEENKERALA NADVATHUL MUJAHIDEEN
PrefaceIn the early 20th century, Kerala witnessed widespread socio-cultural reformation movements in all religious communities. These social changes were pioneered by Chattampi Swamikal (1853-1924) among Namboothiris, Ayyankali (1863- 1941) among Pulayas, Sri Narayana Guru (1855-1928) and Dr. Padmanabhan Palpu (1863–1950) among Ezhavas, Mannath Padmanabhan (1878-1970) among Nair Hindus, and Sanaulla Makti Thangal (1847-1914) among Muslims.
Makti Thangal travelled throughout Kerala urging the illiterate and ignorant Muslims to liberate themselves from the abyss of superstitions and extremism. His religious discourses were enthusiastically attended by believers from other communities too, thus bringing about harmony and cooperation among the people of Kerala. Subsequently, the deviant Muslim sects who were led by traditionalist clerics, started disintegrating one by one. Kerala Muslim Aikya Sangham the first Muslim Organization in Kerala was established by Makti Thangal in 1922. It was the first organization to work with the mission of eemancipating Muslim minority from the clutches of unholy priesthood and appalling educational backwardness. Aikya Sangham strengthened its operations by liberating Muslim students from the dark inner chambers of mosques to the brighter world of modern Madrassa system. In 1924, Kerala Jam’iyyathul Ulema (KJU) started functioning in spreading the mission of Muslim Aikya Sangham. Devout scholars like Chalilakath Kunhammed Haji, Vakkom Abdul Qader Moulavi, K M Moulavi, K M Seethi Sahib and many other leaders inspired the reformation movement considerably. Eventually by late 1940s, Amani Moulavi and K.M. Moulavi led the Islahi movement in a more organized way. In 1950, the organizational outfit of the movement was named as Kerala Nadwathul Mujahideen (KNM). Its first meeting was held at Calicut city in 1950. In this first session, an appeal was made for resolving the differences among the Muslim society for creating an atmosphere of unity and co-operation by educating the masses. In 1954, KNM was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.
Pious scholars like M.K. Haji, E.K. Moulavi, N. V. Abdussalam Moulavi, K. P. Muhammad Moulavi, Shaikh Muhammed Moulavi, A. P. Abdul Qadir Moulavi, A. V. Abdurahman Haji and Dr. Usman Sahib were the erstwhile prominent leaders of the Movement. KNM is now led by T.P. Abdulla Koya Madani (President), Dr Hussain Madavur (Vice President) and P. P. Unneenkutty Moulavi (General Secretary).
KNM has now grown up into a huge organization spreading Allah’s Divine Message of Touhid, among the entire Muslim community across the borders of Kerala and to all other parts of India .
Right from its inception, the main objectives of KNM included the following:To infuse Muslim masses with true Islamic faith, life pattern and culture according to the Islamic discipline stipulated in Quran and Sunnah and to safeguard them from superstition, divergences and terrorism. To engage in such activities as are necessary for educational development of all communities in general; and the Muslim communities in particularTo establish a central Arabic institute in Kerala which would serve as a useful Centre for studying Arabic language and literature and in theological subjects.
Now in the wake of incessant blitz of modernization, innovation and sophistication, educational systems are driven to paradigm shifts in campuses. Postmodern campuses are intellectual battlefields, where students have deep convictions about race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. As Michael Shermer wrote in the Scientific American (September 2017), social justice antipathy of modern students toward capitalism, racism, caste feelings, ethic supremacy privilege, misogyny and “cissexist hetero-patriarchy” have been stumbling blocks in the path of realization of human values and morality, which ultimately lead to campus chaos and even violence. Unfortunately this deadly epidemic has percolated into Muslim educational institutions too. So it is strongly felt that KNM should take up leadership and lead the way to an effective and professional educational strategy for spreading the Islamic value system and imparting modern education among Muslims.
KNM’s Vision is a blueprint of KNM’s strategic planning ranging from its organizational structure to the humanitarian operations. Needless to say, the benefits of strategic planning can be used to formulate and design KNM’s vision and mission, values, goals and objectives, priorities, roles and responsibilities, and timelines. The derivative benefits of a accurately framed vision are: profound realization of ethical and moral values upheld by KNM; awareness of environmental issues and close relationship with nature; continuous and sustainable development and creative feedback from the society.
